This is the summer of Texas 4000! Texas 4000 is a non-profit student organization from the University of Texas that is dedicated to fighting cancer by sharing hope, knowledge, and charity across North America through a 4,500 mile bicycle ride from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska. I will be spending 70 days with 45 of my closest friends pedaling through deserts, mountains, cities, and everything in between. We will sleep in schools, homes, campsites, anything that's free. The ride is the eye catcher but the most important part of Texas 4000 is what we do when we are off our bike. As a team, we raise money for cancer research and give programs throughout the ride spreading the latest information in cancer prevention and research. I will be trying to post pictures, videos, daily comments on this blog, but I will also be updating my journal on www.texas4000.org.

Day 37 Davis Challenge to San Francisco

It was a lot of fun to do the hakka in front of thousands of people!

Day 36 rest day in Davis: Volunteering for LIVESTRONG

Today we were volunteering at the Davis LIVESTRONG challenge. We meet so many inspiring people who are also dedicated to kicking some serious cancer butt.
After a day full of registering and cow bell ringing we went to a dinner with some of the VIPs (included a one Lance Armstrong). Our very own Ryan and Kylee were chosen to speak, we were very proud of them!

That may or may not be Lance Armstrong's seat...

Day 35 South Lake Tahoe to Davis

What a fun day!

A beautiful lake before Carson's Pass that happened to be filled with leeches. I luckily didn't get in before this discovery was made. :)

We saw snow for the first time this summer and spent several hours playing!

Day 34 Rest Day in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe is absolutely gorgeous and all of us were completely spoiled by our hosts!

Sarah and I stayed in the cashmere room! Everything was cashmere!

We had a wonderful time exploring Tahoe

BUT the best part was when I went to an orthopedic surgery and he said although it would be painful I can ride! As an added bonus I don't have to wear my knee brace anymore (it was actually making things worse) I was glad to be rid of that eye sore.

Day 33 Fallon to South Lake Tahoe, CA

Finally we made it to the "Promise Land" of California

Day 32 Austin to Fallon

The route was on the Highway to the Danger Zone! Top Gun was filmed in Fallon and we couldn't miss this opportunity for a rest stop...

We even had a 2 minute reenactment of the film
Shoe tree

Day 31 Eureka to Austin

JULY 4TH!! Today's theme: 'MERICA!!! I have never seen so much pride!
We surprised the riders with this little treat!

Day 30 Ely to Eureka

These green signs are beginning to seem very familiar...

Day 29 Pioche to Ely

Nevada is an interesting place...

We leave our mark

Day 28 Dammeron Valley to Pioche NV

Day 27 Zion to Dammeron Valley

My host taught me how to fight off gophers...the secret is ammonia and dryer sheets.

Day 25 and 26 Kenab to Zion National Park and rest day

More camping! Zion is absolutely breath taking, I think I like it more than the Grand Canyon!

Day 24 Grand Canyon to Kenab Utah!

Day 3 of camping, but it's not nearly as beautiful as the Grand Canyon and there is no where to hike. We are a little bored... resorted to painting each other's nails.

Day 23 Grand Canyon

I can't describe how beautiful it was so I won't...

Day 22 Page to Grand Canyon

Day 21 Tuba City to Page

Unfortunately my knee started swelling pretty badly so I only rode for about 20 miles.

Today was a reststop jackpot! We had a birthday party themed rest stop, a concert featuring Ben, and a spa!

Lake Powell

Day 20 Flagstaff to Tuba City

I'm riding again and it was a 78 mile day my longest for the summer! Today we got to see how versatile Arizona is going from snow covered peak to sand dunes.

Day 19 Cottonwood to Flagstaff

I made another attempt at riding which worked out because we had to SAG again due to construction, but I was fortunate enough to ride through the beautiful Sedona.

Day 18 Prescott to Cottonwood

A day that will live in infamy, my knee was in a lot of pain again so I was SAGing with my teammate Kylee. We drove ahead with the trainer and had possibly the most frustrating day of our summer while our teammates had one of the best. After getting into Cottonwood we realized our travel information was wrong, we had no host for the night, and tried desperately to find a place to stay. Meanwhile the team climbed Mingus Mountain and spent several hours exploring Jerome an old mining town. In the end everything was figured out and we had a place to stay, but needless to say Kylee and I were jealous of our teammates and their adventures.

Day 17 Camp Verde to Prescott

In the cute town of Prescott we got to stay indoors and shower to the first time in a couple days!

Day 16 Tonto National Forest to Camp Verde

The ride was very short and mostly downhill and the parts that were downhill were VERY downhill so I was given permission to ride!!

We made it to Camp Verde in no time

We were all entranced by the beauty of the Arizona sunset

Day 15 Rest Day in Tonto National Forest

Day 14 Show Low to Tonto National Forest

The roads got very dangerous about half way through the day so we had to SAG the team which is always a drag but we broke the news with lots of donated pizza so everyone was dancing and in high spirits in no time.

First of many "I'm on a Boat" performances
We arrived at Tonto National Forest for our first ever camping day!
