This is the summer of Texas 4000! Texas 4000 is a non-profit student organization from the University of Texas that is dedicated to fighting cancer by sharing hope, knowledge, and charity across North America through a 4,500 mile bicycle ride from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska. I will be spending 70 days with 45 of my closest friends pedaling through deserts, mountains, cities, and everything in between. We will sleep in schools, homes, campsites, anything that's free. The ride is the eye catcher but the most important part of Texas 4000 is what we do when we are off our bike. As a team, we raise money for cancer research and give programs throughout the ride spreading the latest information in cancer prevention and research. I will be trying to post pictures, videos, daily comments on this blog, but I will also be updating my journal on www.texas4000.org.

Day 10 and 11 Albuquerque Rest Day

Due to the fires in Arizona, we had two "rest"days though they weren't very restful. We have actually decided to rename our rest days-adventure days. We hit up bike shops and ran a few errands followed by lunch at the Frontier...green chili yum. Then we rode the tram to Sandia Peak!

The 15 minute tram ride was totally worth the beautiful view, but I did feel pretty sick by the time we reached the top.
"It's so beautiful I could throw up..."

We ended our adventure day with dinner and a program at the mayor's house.

Day 9 Encino to Albuquerque

After a 115 mile ride the team rolled into beautiful Albuquerque. The team was joined by Woman Riding Well, a local riding group for the last 20 miles.

We had a blue filled day at rest stops. Using sunscreen and food coloring we painted ourselves blue to recreate the Blue Man (and Woman) Group and later the Smurfs.

We meet some interesting characters along the way....

Day 8 Fort Sumner to Encino

The desert landscape inspired us to create a tribal themed rest stop...

Day 7 Clovis to Fort Sumner

It's Friday Friday Friday so accordingly we had a Friday themed rest stop, thanks Rebeeca Black

The ride was only 60 miles so we had some time to spare at the rest stops. We decided to play a pick-up game of apple baseball followed by ninja.
The pitch....

swing and a hit!

The smoke from the fires in Arizona is starting to affect us but we find clever ways to  overcome.

The final show-down in ninja

Day 6 Lubbock to Clovis

The team rode 102 miles and crossed the first state border!! I was able to test out my knee and ride the first 20 miles of the day with the team.

Our first rest stop was British themed: Queen Alanna, tea (or water labeled as tea), Adele, and the Beatles were just a few of things we incorporated. All speaking done at the rest stop had to be done in an English accent.

We out did ourselves and also included a creep themed rest stop before the border race for all the SNL fans on our team.

Even the van was having trouble in the hot weather

It was a tough day but everyone did great and we got into New Mexico safe and sound greeted by our wonderful hosts holding popsicles and cold towels.

Day 5 Synder to Lubbock

Today was a long hot day and the riders were beginning to feel it....

But we did all we could to keep their spirits up including a Michael Jackson themed rest stop complete with the thriller!

Lane looks adorable even after 65 miles

We stayed at the McPherson Winery

Our generous hosts provided us with dinner at their restaurant...we clean up pretty nice

Only five days in but (life long) friendships are already developing :)

Day 4 Winters to Synder

I'm starting to get the hang of this SAG thing. Ben and I were able to get food donated thanks to our charms and the lovely people of Sweetwater.

Kylee and Lane bought some midday pick me up popsicles!

Everyone was pretty excited!

Then we ended the 89 mile day with a gangsta themed rest stop...water guns included

Day 3 Brownwood to Winters

My knee is preventing me from riding for another week so another day as SAG!

Sam writing words of inspiration on a huge hill

We had a wonderful lunch rest stop at the Reynolds

The hot dog feast was greatly appreciated!

Then we had another incredible themed rest stop: Egyptian!

Mummies included

We ended the day with a swim and a program for the Winter Chamber of Commerce and our hosts! I had an incredible host who built us a fire and feed us lots of goodies.

Day 2 Brownwood TX

Dinosaur Themed Rest Stop!

Everything had to be done using t-rex arms
And we did danced like dinosaurs to....DINOSAUR by Kesha

I think I'm going to win best rest stop of the week...

-2 Days

T-minus 2 day until the day of departure. This means meetings, guest speakers, meetings, wall ball, and just a lot of time at the CPE in general. Today was a nice change from the windowless classrooms as we ventured to a nearby park to practice using our camping equipment and take inventory. We set up our tents in record time then with the guidance of alumni John Fitch we prepared a typical dinner meal of vegetarian spaghetti. Yum!
