This is the summer of Texas 4000! Texas 4000 is a non-profit student organization from the University of Texas that is dedicated to fighting cancer by sharing hope, knowledge, and charity across North America through a 4,500 mile bicycle ride from Austin, Texas to Anchorage, Alaska. I will be spending 70 days with 45 of my closest friends pedaling through deserts, mountains, cities, and everything in between. We will sleep in schools, homes, campsites, anything that's free. The ride is the eye catcher but the most important part of Texas 4000 is what we do when we are off our bike. As a team, we raise money for cancer research and give programs throughout the ride spreading the latest information in cancer prevention and research. I will be trying to post pictures, videos, daily comments on this blog, but I will also be updating my journal on www.texas4000.org.
Day 52 Olympia to Seattle and Day 53 Rest Day
My dad's side of the family surprised me in Seattle!! They spoiled me and I had so much fun sight seeing with them!
Day 51 Longview to Olympia
Day 48 Lincoln City to Portland!
Day 45 Brookings to Bandon
Day 44 Eureka to Brookings OR
We entered Oregon today! Tonight we had dinner at Zola's a local pizza place. The owner's son is in a band and they played for us or it started that way, but by the end of the night we had turned it into live karaoke. Whoops :)
Day 43 Redway to Eureka
After our ride today something happened that rarely happens, everyone on our time was full. Our absolutely amazing hosts had the most food we had ever seen. Sushi, chocolate fountain, you name they probably had it. It was incredible.
Day 42 Fort Bragg to Redway
Today became known as the T4K in Wonderland Day, the ride was made up of a steady incline with lots of turns. Every corner we rounded took us to a stretch of road that more or less looked identical to the road we previously encountered. After about 50 miles we felt like we were making no progress and going a little mad, I'm sure the four hours of sleep we got thanks for Harry Potter didn't help matters. Unlike Alice, we didn't meet giant flowers, but we did see giant redwoods!
Day 41 Point Arena to Fort Bragg
It was a short riding day and lots of fun, but less fun was what came next... laundry. Not just laundry but laundry for the entire very smelly team. Kylee, Steve, and I foolishly agreed to do everyone's more or less matching laundry which proved to be a nightmare. The smells that assaulted my nose made me question my teammates' hygiene and worst still when we returned from the laundry mat everyone was having a hard time finding their belongings and looked to us for answers. In the end, everyone found their things and apologized for their bo and lack of gratitude. The evening ended with a midnight showing of Harry Potter and a reenactment of our favorite past moments...
Day 40 Tomales to Point Arena
This was probably the worst riding day I had on the ride. It was 80 miles of fog, hills, and lots of knee pain. I was getting dropped left and right but I finished the day powering up a huge hill that left me feeling exhausted, in pain, but so satisfied.
Day 39 San Francisco to Tomales
After so much waiting we finally get to cross the Golden Gate Bridge!! This also marks the first day on the beautiful Hwy 1
Everyone was in high spirits after this monumental day, even the confusion and wrong directions that followed couldn't dampen our spirits. Speaking of which, the rest of the day was extremely damp and fog we all agreed it looked like a scene of Sleeping Hollows.

Day 38 Rest Day in San Francisco
We stayed with Carlos on Market Street in the heart of San Fran. After a wonderful breakfast we explored the fisherman's wharf, Ghiradelli square, and a couple other tourists spots. We finished the day at a dinner with San Francisco's Texas Exes and a program.
